Focal Aware Seizure

Seizure affecting one area of the brain without loss of consciousness or awareness

What you may see: 

  • Unusual sensations: tingling, numbness, or a strange smell or taste 

  • Jerking or twitching in one part of the body (arm, leg, or face) 

  • Sudden intense emotion (fear, joy, or deja vu feeling) 

  • Visual disturbances: flashing lights or colors 

 

What to do: 

  • Stay calm and stay with your child 

  • Speak in a calm, reassuring voice 

  • Note the time and what you observe 

  • Do not restrain your child 

How to help:

  • Speak gently and reassure your child that they are safe

  • Allow them to rest or sleep if they need to Stay with them until they are fully oriented to person, place, and time

  • Do not offer food or drink until your child is fully awake and alert
