Infantile Spasms

Clustered Movements that require prompt medical attention.

What you may see:

  • Sudden bending forward of the body with arms and legs extending outward (like a "jackknife")

  • Occur in clusters — a series of spasms one after another

  • May look like the baby is being startled or experiencing colic

  • Often occur when the baby is drowsy or just waking up

🚨 Important: Infantile spasms are a medical emergency. If you notice your baby having repetitive jerking or bending episodes, contact your doctor or go to the emergency room immediately. Early treatment is critical.

How to help:

  • Speak gently and reassure your child that they are safe

  • Allow them to rest or sleep if they need to Stay with them until they are fully oriented to person, place, and time

  • Do not offer food or drink until your child is fully awake and alert
