Tonic-Clonic Seizure

A seizure that involves two phases: tonic phase with muscle stiffening followed by clonic phase with rhythmic jerking movements.

Brief, sudden jerking of the arms, legs, or whole body

 After the Seizure (Postictal Period)
  • After a seizure, your child may go through a recovery period called the postictal phase.

  • This is completely normal and can last from a few minutes to several hours.

What you may notice:
  • Confusion, disorientation, or not knowing where they are

  • Extreme fatigue or a desire to sleep Headache or muscle aches

  • Emotional upset — crying, fear, or embarrassment

  • Memory loss about the seizure itself

  • How to help: Speak gently and reassure your child that they are safe

  • Allow them to rest or sleep if they need to

  • Stay with them until they are fully oriented to person, place, and time

  • Do not offer food or drink until your child is fully awake and alert
