Tonic Seizures

Sudden muscle stiffening without the jerking phase.

What you may see: 

  • Sudden stiffening of the arms, legs, or entire body 

  • If standing, child may fall suddenly and rigidly — fall injuries are common 

  • Eyes may roll upward 

  • Usually brief — lasts 20 seconds to 1 minute 

How to help:

  • Speak gently and reassure your child that they are safe

  • Allow them to rest or sleep if they need to Stay with them until they are fully oriented to person, place, and time

  • Do not offer food or drink until your child is fully awake and alert
